Things to Do in Delaware in the Winter

Delaware is a small state but, when it comes to things to do, there’s something for everyone. What may not be so apparent from a quick drive on the interstate on the way to a DC or Philly is a fun state brimming with adventures. Delaware’s cities, coastline, and parks offer many things to discover – even in winter. In fact, we’ll bet that once you have experienced some of these adventures, you might just want to move here! Here is just a sampling of some of the fun things to do in Delaware this winter:

The Lewes Polar Bear Plunge!

This event got its start in 1982 at Cape Henlopen State Park, where club members chose to jump into the icy Atlantic during the coldest month of the year. In 1991, Special Olympics Delaware suggested they might do a plunge to benefit their organization and, since then, the event has turned into a major state fundraiser. The most recent plunge in 2014 saw 3,252 participants and raised more than $725,000 for its worthy cause! Now is the time to sign up for the 2015 Lewes Polar Bear Plunge, which will take place on February 1st at Rehoboth Beach.

Shopping the Outlets

Feeling cooped up, but not quite adventurous enough to go jumping into the ocean? We feel you! And we have the perfect solution to your troubles. The Tanger Outlets in Rehoboth are open year-round and offer you a great way to get out of the house without freezing. Check out their selection after the holidays for extra end-of-season savings and get a head start on your swimsuit shopping before your friends have even started thinking about spring! With stores like BCBGMAXAZRIA, Nine West, Fossil, Bare Minerals, Columbia Sportswear, and Claire’s, there’s something for everyone!

Nassau Valley Vineyard Wine Tastings

Founded in 1993 by Peg Raley and her father, the vineyard is Delaware’s first and only award-winning winery. They offer a wide variety of wines, including several fruit-based dessert wines, and their award list is extremely long. Tours and tastings for the winery are scheduled year-round, so don’t let the cold weather deter you!

Ovation Dinner Theatre

Ever want to be part of a play and enjoy dinner at the same time? Ovation Dinner Theatre has just what you’re looking for! When you attend a performance, you get to enjoy a five-star, three-course dinner as you watch. The show is interactive, which means that audience members will have the opportunity to participate in the drama. Ovation Dinner Theatre is scheduled at a number of venues, so be sure to check them out!
